Missouri Reports Two Salmonella Cases Linked to Backyard Poultry

New Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Backyard Poultry Sickens Seven Across Six States

NEW YORK—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Monday that a new salmonella outbreak associated with backyard poultry has resulted in at least seven infections across six states.

Confirmed cases include two in Missouri and one each in Florida, Illinois, South Dakota, Utah, and Wisconsin, with infections occurring in February and March of this year. All affected individuals are found to have contracted the same strain of salmonella, historically traced back to hatcheries. The investigation into the source of the outbreak is ongoing, as health officials remain vigilant.

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for approximately 1.35 million infections annually in the United States. Recent outbreaks have stemmed from various sources, including cucumbers, eggs, unpasteurized milk, fresh basil, geckos, and pet bearded dragons. However, a notable concern is that backyard poultry can harbor salmonella bacteria even if they appear healthy and clean.

This outbreak follows a previous salmonella incident linked to backyard poultry that concluded last year, resulting in 470 reported cases across 48 states, along with one related death. The CDC and local health officials continue to stress the importance of safe handling practices when dealing with live poultry, emphasizing that individuals can inadvertently contract bacteria from seemingly healthy birds.

As the CDC actively investigates the current outbreak, citizens are encouraged to practice caution when interacting with backyard poultry to reduce the risk of infection. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
