Press Release: Advancements in Glaucoma Treatment Highlighted at 2025 ASCRS Annual Meeting
Los Angeles, CA – At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting held from April 25 to 28, 2025, Dr. Deb Ristvedt moderated a pivotal session titled "Medications, Lasers, and Lifestyle," focusing on the transformative advancements in glaucoma treatment.
Dr. Ristvedt emphasized the exciting and rapid evolution of treatment paradigms: “We’re going less drops. We’re going earlier in the angle,” indicating a shift towards earlier interventions to reduce visual field loss in patients.
Key advancements in drug delivery systems took center stage, with Dr. Doug Rhee presenting compelling findings on the sustained effects of medications at the trabecular meshwork. These new medications enhance intraocular pressure (IOP) stability throughout the day, promoting longer-term control in glaucoma management.
Laser therapy also underwent significant discussion, particularly in light of the LiGHT trial’s findings positioning Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as a foundational treatment. A new generation of SLT technology was highlighted, which delivers energy directly to the trabecular meshwork, achieving comparable outcomes to traditional SLT but in a fraction of the time—only 2.6 seconds. This innovation not only improves treatment efficacy but also enhances patient experience and surgeon ergonomics by eliminating the requirement for a gonio lens.
Additionally, the session explored the importance of lifestyle factors in managing glaucoma. Dr. Ristvedt underscored that lifestyle choices significantly impact patients’ quality of life, advocating for a more holistic and patient-centric approach to glaucoma care.
The ASCRS meeting showcased that the future of glaucoma treatment promises to be innovative and more aligned with patient needs, reinforcing a commitment to elevating care standards.
