On Wednesday, Smokey Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, dismissed recent sexual assault accusations against the Motown legend as false, asserting that the claims are an attempt to exploit the 85-year-old icon for financial gain. The allegations surfaced in a lawsuit from four former housekeepers, seeking over $50 million in damages, claiming that Robinson sexually assaulted them over several years, primarily at his home in Chatsworth, California.
Frost described the lawsuit as a “media circus” and indicated that Robinson would address the allegations in due course. The plaintiffs, identified in court documents as Jane Does 1-4, are reportedly low-wage Hispanic women who struggled to protect themselves due to their vulnerable positions. During a recent press conference, three of the women wore masks while discussing their claims, which include repeated assaults between 2014 and 2020, with one alleging 23 incidents. Another accused Robinson of assaulting her at least 20 times over twelve years beginning in 2012.
Details in the lawsuit suggest that Robinson would force at least one employee into his bedroom while performing rituals to avoid soiling the linens. The plaintiffs also implicated Robinson’s wife, Frances, claiming she contributed to a hostile work environment by using derogatory language.
Frost stated plans to seek dismissal of the lawsuit and criticized the plaintiffs’ attorneys for their actions during the press conference, emphasizing his commitment to defending Robinson and preserving his reputation. Robinson, who helped establish Motown Records and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, is preparing for a vigorous defense against what he deems false allegations.
