Fargo Welcomes New Leadership in Missouri Valley Football Conference

Fargo, ND — The Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) has made a significant leadership change, appointing Jeff Jackson as its new commissioner, effective July 1. Jackson, currently serving as the commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), succeeds Patty Viverito, who has led the MVFC since its inception as the Gateway Football Conference in 1985.

Jackson, who became MVC commissioner in 2021, brings extensive experience to his new role, having previously worked at both the Big 12 Conference and the Big South Conference. His career in athletics spans over three decades, including a robust background in coaching men’s basketball.

In addition to Jackson’s appointment, the MVFC has named Josh Fenton as executive advisor, aiming to strengthen ties between the MVFC and the Summit League. Fenton will continue his position as Summit conference commissioner, a role he assumed in 2023. This partnership is seen as vital for the future of the conferences, especially since several schools, including North Dakota State and South Dakota State, are members of both leagues.

In a statement, Jackson emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative environment, stating, "Our collective efforts will be instrumental in delivering an exceptional experience for our student-athletes.” The MVFC is planning to introduce a chief operating officer as part of its strategic expansion and will maintain its independence as a legal entity distinct from its multi-sport member institutions.

Viverito’s retirement marks the end of an era for the MVFC, which transitioned to its current name in 2008 when NDSU and SDSU joined. Her leadership has been pivotal in shaping the conference’s identity and success over the decades. As the MVFC prepares for its future, the new leadership team is poised to navigate the evolving landscape of college athletics.
