Betsy Arakawa’s Dog Remains by Her Side Amidst Rodent Infestation

A state assessment conducted on the Santa Fe property of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa following their deaths found evidence of rodents, but their main living quarters were not infested. Hackman, 95, died from cardiovascular disease and Arakawa, 65, from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome believed to be caused by contact with rodents or their droppings. Arakawa was observed visiting stores the day before she most likely passed away on February 12th. The couple’s daughters reported that Hackman was in decline, often forgetting important information like his birthday. The inspectors found rodents in detached buildings on the property, but the main house where the couple was found was clean. Body camera footage showed the dogs remaining close to the deceased bodies, with one dog found dead in a crate. A veterinary pathologist speculated that the deceased dog may have died from lack of food and water if confined during the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa. The bodies were discovered by a maintenance worker who grew concerned about Arakawa’s unusual silence. The couple’s family allowed a friend to take possession of the surviving dogs. The documents released by Santa Fe authorities shed light on the couple’s private life and the sad circumstances of their deaths.
