Missouri House to Consider GOP-supported Abortion Measure

Missouri House Republicans are moving forward with a plan to ask voters to repeal the abortion-rights constitutional amendment approved less than six months ago. The proposed plan would allow abortion in certain circumstances, such as medical emergencies, fetal anomalies, rape, and incest within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. However, it would also clear the way for all other abortions to be prohibited through court action or future laws passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature.

House Minority Leader Ashley Aune criticized the plan, stating it would completely repeal the previous abortion amendment and constitutionally ban abortion in almost all circumstances. The proposal has faced opposition, with some Republicans divided on how to move forward on abortion. There have been concerns about shutting down testimony on the proposal in committee, with calls for the chairwoman, Rep. Holly Jones, to resign if she cannot tolerate dissent.

The measure also includes a ban on treatments for transgender minors and prohibits abortions based on a prenatal diagnosis indicating disability. The legislation, House Joint Resolution 73, aims to give the General Assembly the power to approve abortion regulations and restrictions. If passed, the proposal would be put before voters this year or next.
