Israeli forces have completed the encirclement of Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah as part of a plan to seize more areas of the enclave, leading to large-scale evacuations of the population. The military has been issuing evacuation warnings to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians since resuming operations in Gaza on March 18, forcing them into a limited space near the sea. Troops have begun seizing an area known as the Morag Axis, a former Israeli settlement between Rafah and Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The offensive was launched after Hamas attacked southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in casualties and hostages.
Since the offensive began, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled Rafah, with more than 50,000 killed and much of Gaza left in ruins. Israel has restarted the offensive in March, aiming to free hostages and eradicate Hamas from Gaza. Hamas, in turn, insists on a deal to end the war and has rejected calls to disarm. A Hamas delegation was expected in Cairo to discuss truce proposals. The campaign is set to continue until remaining hostages are freed and Hamas is removed from Gaza.
