Former Missouri Senator Roy Blunt honored with namesake project in Downtown South Loop

Kansas City, Missouri has announced that a major project aimed at connecting the Central Business District with the Crossroads Art District by creating a cap over I-670 will be named the Roy Blunt Luminary Park. The project will cover 5.5 acres over I-670 from Wyandotte Street to Grand Boulevard and was initially announced at a cost of $160 million in April 2022. State and federal funds will be added to the city’s contribution to pay for the project.

City Council members have approved a contract with Clarkson Construction and JE Dunn as the general contractor for the project, paving the way for preconstruction services to begin and the project to start in 2025. Former Missouri Senator Roy Blunt, who played a crucial role in securing federal funds for the project, will have the park named after him.

Blunt, who served as a Republican Congressman from 1997-2011 and then as a Senator from 2011-2023, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in making the state competitive. The project has received additional funding from MoDOT to ensure it stays on schedule. The announcement of the naming of Roy Blunt Luminary Park comes three years after the project was initially announced.
