Dave Portnoy expresses regret over Barstool Sports’ involvement in spreading a ‘vicious rumor’ that negatively impacted an Ole Miss student’s life.

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, apologized to college freshman Mary Kate Cornett for the false viral rumor that circulated online. Cornett’s family stated that the claims had “practically ruined” her life. The false rumors originated when ESPN host Pat McAfee discussed them on a show in February, without specifically naming Cornett. Two individuals associated with Barstool Sports then referenced the rumor on their personal social media accounts. Portnoy denied Barstool Sports’ involvement in promoting the rumor, stating that it was likely fabricated. He expressed regret over their part in the situation and hoped to meet with Cornett’s family. Cornett’s lawyers offered the options of a lawsuit or mediation. Portnoy intended to pursue mediation instead. Cornett faced cyberbullying and harassment in the aftermath of the rumor, feeling helpless and alone. McAfee has not responded to requests for comment, but he mentioned being sued by Brett Favre during a recent show and expressed a desire to not be a part of anything negative in anyone’s life. He promised to work towards making a silver lining in the situation.
