Missouri Treasurer to address pension divestment from foreign adversaries in discussion with KBSI FOX23 News Cape Girardeau News

Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek and State Representative Barry Hovis are set to hold a press conference on Friday, April 11, 2025, to discuss legislative efforts aimed at requiring Missouri’s public pension systems to divest from certain foreign adversaries, including China. The conference will take place at 1:00 p.m. outside the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse in Jackson, MO.

Malek previously recommended that the Missouri State Employees Retirement System (MOSERS) divest from Chinese entities in December 2023, making it one of the first public pension systems in the nation to take such action. Prompted by concerns over investment ties to foreign adversaries and the protection of public employees’ retirement funds, Malek is advocating for similar policies to be adopted statewide.

The move comes as part of a growing national concern over investment relationships with countries considered to be adversaries. Malek and Hovis hope to raise awareness and encourage other public pension systems in Missouri to follow suit. The press conference is open to media and on-site arrangements can be made by contacting Kristi Nitsch at 573-204-2494.
