The federal government has selected Missouri, along with six other states, to expand nuclear energy programs in response to the growing demand for power caused by the rise of Artificial Intelligence and data centers. State Department of Natural Resources Director Kurt Schaefer stated that the move is the beginning of a discussion to revitalize nuclear energy in the United States to meet the escalating energy demand.
Missouri is a key player in the program, with the University of Missouri operating two nuclear reactors and Ameren running a nuclear power plant in mid Missouri. The Callaway Energy Center currently generates 14% of in-state electricity. Schaefer emphasized the importance of exploring additional energy production options to meet the demand while considering the environmental impact, pointing out nuclear power as a carbon emission-free alternative.
Missouri’s application for the program was highlighted due to its collaboration plans with key private utility companies and organizations. The National Governor’s Association and the U.S. Department of Energy will provide technical support to develop nuclear energy policy and financing options in the state. Schaefer acknowledged that financing can be a challenge in deploying nuclear energy but expressed optimism about moving forward with the assistance from the federal government.
A summit will be held in Missouri to facilitate the implementation of the state’s nuclear energy plans. This initiative is expected to contribute to meeting the increasing energy demand while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly power sources.
