Child Advocates Rally at Missouri State Capitol for Child Advocacy Day
Over 550 child advocates gathered at the Missouri State Capitol for the 43rd Annual Child Advocacy Day, organized by Kids Win Missouri and various statewide child advocacy organizations. The assembly aimed to advance legislative policies supporting children’s welfare as Missouri faces a critical childcare crisis.
The rally highlighted Missouri’s childcare desert issue, with 97% of counties lacking childcare services for infants and toddlers. Advocates supported Governor Mike Kehoe’s proposed enrollment-based payment system for childcare subsidy providers to ensure stable funding. They also proposed a comprehensive childcare exchange program to address regional shortages and improve access to quality care.
Executive Director of Kids Win Missouri, Brian Schmidt, emphasized the economic importance of addressing childcare shortages, citing a $1.35 billion annual loss due to lack of affordable options. Schmidt noted that collaboration between employers and state officials, coupled with proposed payment changes, could offer comprehensive solutions to the crisis.
Advocates shared personal stories illustrating the impact of childcare shortages on families and communities, stressing that investing in children is crucial for Missouri’s workforce and economic future. Advocates, including a small group who met with Governor Kehoe, expressed gratitude for his commitment to childcare initiatives and discussed ongoing challenges in the state.
The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry supported these initiatives, highlighting the economic benefits of addressing childcare issues. The united front presented by advocates and legislators reflects a shared dedication to overcoming challenges in childcare access and ensuring the well-being of Missouri’s children.
