Second Lady Usha Vance, along with Energy Secretary Chris Wright and national security adviser Michael Waltz, will be traveling to Greenland this week as part of a U.S. delegation. The visit is intended to celebrate and strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Greenland, focusing on historical sites, Greenlandic heritage, and attending a national dogsled race.
President Donald Trump has been vocal about his desire for the U.S. to take ownership of Greenland, citing national security reasons and the island’s mineral wealth. This has raised concerns among Greenlandic officials, including outgoing Prime Minister Mute B. Egede, who sees the U.S. delegation’s visit as a possible show of force.
While the White House has not commented on the purpose of the trip, Trump has stated that acquiring Greenland is a top priority for national security. He has even suggested using military force if necessary, claiming that NATO may need to be involved in annexing the territory. Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, has consistently rejected Trump’s proposal to take over the island.
In January, Donald Trump Jr. also visited Greenland in support of his father’s efforts. Despite these strong assertions from the U.S. administration, Greenlandic and Danish leaders remain firm in their rejection of any attempt to forcibly take over the territory.
