Deep divisions in Syria highlighted by attacks on Alawites

In the aftermath of deadly violence in the Syrian village of Qabo Al-Awamiya in the Latakia countryside, videos have emerged showing revenge killings targeting the Alawite community, to which the Assad family belongs. Over 1,300 people were killed, with hundreds of civilians, government soldiers, and fighters loyal to Assad among the victims.

The response from security forces has helped stabilize the violence, but deep divisions continue to exist in Syrian society after a decade of civil war. Interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa faces the challenge of leading a more unified and inclusive Syria.

Accusations have been made that government forces were behind the retaliatory attacks, casting doubt on Sharaa’s ability to bring those responsible to justice. Despite his calls for peace and promises of investigation, many in the Alawite community are living in fear after being forced out of their homes and experiencing violent attacks.

The violence marks a significant turning point in Syria following Assad’s ouster, with sectarian tensions coming to a boil. The challenges of navigating a complex security landscape with deep divisions require decisive action from Sharaa to hold those responsible for the violence accountable.

While the security situation may have stabilized, there is widespread confusion about peace within the country. The rule of law and the effectiveness of Sharaa’s leadership will be tested in how he responds to the violence and whether he can prevent future attacks on the Alawite community.
