Apple is reportedly planning to adopt TSMC’s 2nm process for the A20 chip in next year’s iPhone 18 models, marking a major leap in chip architecture. This move comes after this year’s iPhone 17 models will utilize TSMC’s N3P 3nm process. Moving to a newer generation chip architecture can result in performance and efficiency enhancements, with the biggest improvements seen with new process nodes.
The A17 Pro and M3 chips introduced 3nm technology in 2023, and the shift to 2nm for the iPhone 18 models will kick off a new three-year chip cycle. TSMC has stated that 2nm chips should offer a 15% performance boost while maintaining power consumption levels.
According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, TSMC has achieved yields of 60-70% for 2nm chips in trial production, exceeding expectations. While it’s uncertain if the 2026 M6 chip family for Macs will adopt 2nm technology, it is a possibility.
