New Government Memo Reveals Trump Administration’s Push for USAID to Embrace Blockchain Technology

The Trump administration is reportedly planning to restructure USAID by changing its name to U.S. International Humanitarian Assistance (IHA) and integrating blockchain technology into its procurement process, according to a leaked memo obtained by WIRED. The use of blockchain technology aims to increase security, transparency, and traceability in aid distributions. The restructuring comes after USAID staff were put on administrative leave and the workforce was cut down significantly by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). It is still unclear how exactly blockchain technology will be used in the agency’s operations, but possibilities include using a blockchain ledger to record aid distribution and possibly distributing monetary aid through cryptocurrencies like stablecoin. Other humanitarian organizations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Kenya Red Cross Society, have previously used blockchain technology in aid distribution projects. Trump recently delivered a virtual address at the Digital Assets Summit, advocating for stablecoin regulations and market structure rules. The integration of blockchain technology into USAID’s operations represents the administration’s push toward innovation, efficiency, and tangible impact focused programming.
