The stranded astronauts at NASA’s space station greet their incoming replacements with open arms

The SpaceX crew capsule successfully arrived at the International Space Station, delivering replacements for NASA’s two stuck astronauts. The four newcomers, representing the U.S., Japan, and Russia, will spend time learning from the current astronauts before heading back in an older SpaceX capsule that has been on the station since last year. Originally scheduled for a week-long mission on Boeing’s first astronaut flight, the two stuck astronauts have been in space for nine months due to delays and problems with the Boeing Starliner capsule.

There were delays in the return of Wilmore and Williams due to extensive battery repairs needed on their replacements’ new capsule. Their ride back to Earth is now scheduled for mid-March, with the SpaceX capsule set to undock from the space station and splash down off Florida’s coast, weather permitting. Until then, there will be 11 astronauts aboard the ISS, representing the U.S., Russia, and Japan.

The new arrivals were greeted with hugs and handshakes as they floated into the space station, marking a successful completion of their journey. Wilmore and Williams will be returning home after an unexpected extended mission, grateful to see their friends arrive safely. The extended stay in space has allowed for valuable experience and knowledge sharing between the members of the ISS crew.
