The University of Missouri Faculty Council recently discussed potential policies that could ban all faculty, staff, and students from betting on Mizzou sports following the legalization of sports betting in Missouri. While Amendment 2 was approved by voters, licensed sports betting has not yet been implemented in the state. The Missouri Gaming Commission is working on opening license applications for sportsbooks, allowing websites and buildings where people can place sports bets. The commission hopes to have applications open by mid-May.
During the meeting, Pam Bruzina, the NCAA Faculty Athletics representative, presented on the impact of sports wagering on colleges and student athletes, suggesting that the university prohibits betting on Mizzou athletics, similar to Purdue University’s policy. The proposed ban would be at the UM system policy level, not requiring state legislature approval.
While the idea was only introduced as a potential proposal, it sparked discussions among council members on how to conduct themselves at the university regarding sports betting. The ban would extend to faculty, staff, students, and independent contractors, and would set a higher standard than what the law requires.
Warhover, MU Faculty Council Chair, emphasized that the proposal is still in the preliminary stages and that there are many steps the university would need to take for it to become a reality. The ultimate goal is to foster a culture of responsibility and integrity within the university community, rather than policing individual behaviors.
