A Missouri father, Daryl Clemmons, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for shooting a youth football coach over playing time for his son. In October 2023, Clemmons shot and wounded Shaquille Latimore, a volunteer coach for the City Rec Legends Football League, during a dispute near a practice field. The coach survived the attack, and both men were armed at the time of the incident.
The father, Clemmons, was found guilty of assault and armed criminal action by a jury last month. The shooting occurred after the coach suggested fighting with fists, but Clemmons opted to use his gun and shot Latimore five times. Following the incident, the football team was suspended due to a series of adult-led incidents that led to the violence.
The defense claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense and filed a motion for a new trial. Prosecutors revealed that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement over the playing time Clemmons’s son was receiving.
Following the guilty verdict, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore denounced the violence and emphasized the importance of promoting teamwork, discipline, and respect in youth sports. In response to the shooting, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis offered counseling to players and witnesses of the incident. The case highlights the dangers of violence in youth sports and the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully.
