77-year-old Democratic Representative from Arizona, Raúl Grijalva, passes away

Longtime Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., passed away at the age of 77 due to complications from his cancer treatment. He had served in the House for over 20 years and was known for his dedication to environmental policies and progressive values. Grijalva was the chair of the Natural Resources Committee and a prominent member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

His death comes just weeks after the sudden passing of first-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas. With Grijalva’s passing, the Republicans now hold a slim majority in the House with 218 seats compared to the Democrats’ 213 seats. Grijalva began his career as a community organizer in Tucson and later served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors.

Grijalva’s staff described him as someone who led with urgency and a commitment to creating lasting change, particularly in the realm of environmental policy, which he often linked to the well-being of future generations. His death is a major loss for the Democratic Party and Congress as a whole. This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
