Preview of What to Expect in the Missouri Legislature This Week

Missouri legislators are making a final push to pass several priority bills before their spring break, including ones that address public safety, tax exemptions, and funding for state government. House Bill 737 & 486 aim to protect foster kids’ survivor benefits, while House Bill 495 would impact law enforcement and penalties for organized crime rings. House Bills 594 & 508 propose allowing long-term capital gains exemptions. House Bill 14 includes extra funding for public education and mental health services. The House may also debate bills related to paid sick leave, minimum wage, child sexual abuse, open enrollment for schools, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy coverage for veterans.

In the Senate, there is a push to bring back the “Second Amendment Preservation Act” and increase income tax credits for low-income senior citizens. Senate Bill 23 would penalize law enforcement agencies enforcing federal gun laws, while Senate Bills 101 & 64 aim to support senior citizens with property taxes. Senate Bill 54 would regulate hemp products to prevent children from getting sick or high. If these bills pass, they will move to the other chamber for further review.
