A brush fire on Long Island in New York that burned 400 acres and prompted response from 80 fire departments and 600 personnel is now 80% contained, according to Suffolk County officials. The Westhampton Pines Fire, which started on Saturday afternoon, is fully knocked down and no longer visible. Governor Kathy Hochul issued a prohibition on most types of outside fires in Long Island and parts of the Hudson Valley due to dry conditions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Several commercial buildings were affected by the fire, with one being fairly destroyed and another significantly damaged, including AutoGate Systems Distributions. Four wildfires burned in Suffolk County on Saturday, but only the Westhampton blaze was still burning by Sunday. Two fire personnel were injured during the fires, one with second-degree burns to his face and another with a head injury.
The region affected by the fires included Long Island and all five of New York City’s boroughs. Conditions are expected to improve in terms of fire weather in the Northeast, with winds calming and temperatures decreasing. President Donald Trump’s team, Governor Hochul, and Senator Chuck Schumer reached out to offer support and assistance during the crisis. Overall, the community came together to address the fires, and thanks were given to volunteers who assisted in containing the blaze.
