Top Five Standouts on Day One in South Carolina by Virgilio Paz


University of Missouri junior golfer Virgilio Paz shined on the first day of the Colleton River Collegiate, finishing fifth with a two-round score of -2. Paz started slow but ended strong in the first round with five birdies in his final 14 holes. In the second round, he finished with two birdies in his final three holes to move up to the top five.

Graduate student Mattias Varjun also had a solid day, finishing 11th with a score of +1. Varjun just missed his best 36-hole score of the season and is aiming for his first top-20 finish of the season on Monday. The rest of the Mizzou team had a mixed day with Veikka Viskari, Trent Mierl, and Brock Snyder rounding out the day’s competition.

The team as a whole is currently tied for sixth place out of 16 schools with a team score of +17. The final day of the tournament kicks off on Monday morning at 6:55 a.m. CT.

Paz’s strong performance on the opening day sets the stage for a potential victory for the University of Missouri men’s golf team in the Colleton River Collegiate.
