The Pentagon plans to deploy nearly 3,000 more active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border

The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as President Donald Trump aims to crack down on illegal immigration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered elements of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion for the mission. Fort Carson is sending 2,400 soldiers, while another 500 soldiers from Fort Stewart will be deployed. The focus will be on transportation, engineering support, detection, and monitoring, rather than interdiction or deportation operations. Currently, there are about 9,200 U.S. troops at the southern border, with 4,200 deployed under federal orders and 5,000 National Guard troops under governors’ control. The new troops are meant to reinforce and expand current border security operations. Trump is determined to increase the military’s involvement in sealing the border and returning detained migrants to their home countries. Military personnel have been assisting at the border since the 1990s to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. The deployment was first reported by The Washington Post.
