Missouri primary sees GOP candidate who burned LGBTQ-inclusive books place 6th

Valentina Gomez, a Republican candidate known for her anti-LGBTQ campaign videos, lost in Missouri’s Republican primary for secretary of state. She garnered 7.4% of the vote and came in sixth out of eight candidates. Her opponent, Missouri state Sen. Denny Hoskins, won with 24.4%. Despite her loss, Gomez claimed to have made history in the name of Jesus Christ and expressed pride in her controversial campaign.

Gomez first gained national attention in February when she set LGBTQ-inclusive books on fire with a flamethrower, vowing to ban such books if elected. She has also made inflammatory comments in videos, including stating that children should not be taught about LGBTQ topics in school. Despite criticism, Gomez stood by her words and videos, saying they will stand the test of time.

The campaign also had repercussions for Gomez’s brother, Jonathan Gomez, who donated to her campaign. He was fired from his position as an aide to Mayor Steven Fulop of Jersey City after the donations were made public. Valentina Gomez threatened to sue the mayor for firing her brother, but Fulop defended the decision, saying Jonathan did not reflect the city’s values.

Jonathan Gomez, in response, stated that he loves his sister but does not support hateful remarks towards the LGBTQ+ community. Fulop’s office confirmed that Jonathan’s termination is in progress. Despite the controversies surrounding her campaign, Valentina Gomez remains defiant in her beliefs and actions.
