Indiana State swimming and diving made history by winning their first Missouri Valley Conference Championship title at the Waukee CSD Natatorium. The Sycamores, led by athletes like Claire Parsons and Jecza Lopez, claimed six event championships and pulled away from Southern Illinois and Missouri State to secure the title. Head Coach Josh Christensen was named MVC Swimming Coach of the Year, while Jecza Lopez earned MVC Diver of the Year honors. The team set multiple records and had a strong showing in the A-Finals throughout the competition.
In Saturday evening finals, Claire Parsons dominated the 1650-yard Freestyle, while other Sycamores placed well in various events, including the 200-yard Backstroke, 100-yard Freestyle, and 200-yard Breaststroke. Jecza Lopez claimed her second diving championship by winning the 3M Springboard event. The Sycamores also won the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
Overall, Indiana State had a successful final day with 10 athletes qualifying for A-Finals in the morning prelims and 15 overall for the evening events. The team’s strong performances set a program record for most athletes advancing to an A-Final in program history.
Next, Indiana State swimming will compete at the CSCAA NIC Meet in Ocala, Fla., while Jecza Lopez will head to the NCAA Diving Zone C in Columbus, Ohio. Fans can follow the team’s progress on social media and the GoSycamores.com website.
