Special counsel overseeing Hunter Biden prosecution resigned without public announcement in January

David Weiss, the federal attorney who investigated and prosecuted Hunter Biden, resigned in January without making a public statement. He voluntarily stepped down as U.S. attorney and special counsel on Jan. 17, just before President Trump began his second term. Weiss was succeeded by acting U.S. Attorney Shannon T. Hanson, who previously worked for him. Weiss’s resignation came after he concluded his investigation and issued a final report on Biden, in which he criticized President Biden for pardoning his son. The president described the prosecution of his son as a “miscarriage of justice,” which Weiss disputed in a court filing. Weiss also responded to President Biden’s criticism of the investigation, stating that politicians who attack career prosecutors undermine confidence in the justice system. The cases brought by Weiss against Hunter Biden led to guilty verdicts on gun-related charges in Delaware and tax and fraud charges in California. Biden was scheduled to be sentenced in December 2024 for both cases. Weiss’s resignation was not related to the conclusion of the investigation, as he submitted it voluntarily and was not asked to resign. Despite the lack of public announcement, the resignation of Weiss raises questions about the handling of high-profile cases and the independence of prosecutors from political influence.
