21-year-old Jesse Henry from Missouri has admitted to stealing over $1.5 million in railroad equipment in Missouri and Illinois. He pleaded guilty to damaging a railroad signal system and admitted to 33 thefts from railroad bungalows in both states. The thefts included equipment, signs, plans, and blueprints. The thefts were noticed by railroads in spring 2023, leading to an investigation by local and federal law enforcement.
One notable theft was equipment controlling a grade crossing in Foristell, Missouri, where the crossing signal was not functioning and the gates were down. The FBI traced the theft back to Henry, and a search of his family’s home recovered the stolen equipment and other items.
Henry is scheduled to be sentenced on June 4. The crime he committed is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. This case highlights the significant financial impact of theft in the railroad industry, as well as the role of local and federal law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting such crimes.
