Missouri GOP lawmakers proceed with abortion referendum proposal

Missouri Republicans are advancing a ballot question to partially reverse the state’s new constitutional right to an abortion. State Rep. Melanie Stinnett’s proposed resolution would only allow abortions in certain cases, along with banning hormones, puberty blockers, and surgeries for gender transition for minors. Amendment 3, passed in November, protects reproductive freedom but has faced legal challenges. Abortion providers like Planned Parenthood have not resumed abortions due to a judge’s decision. The new resolution would also restrict abortions in cases of rape or incest and limit transgender care for minors. If the resolution passes, it could go before voters this year in a special election. The proposed restrictions, including the need for documentation in cases of rape or incest and a ban on public funds for abortions except in cases of fetal anomaly, highlight the ongoing debate around reproductive rights in Missouri. The resolution still needs approval from the House and Senate before heading to voters. House Joint Resolution 54 is the legislation being considered.
