Senator Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, is leading an effort to streamline Missouri’s government by proposing a series of legislation that aims to trim red tape and improve efficiency. The package of five bills includes initiatives to jettison surplus state property, free up unused funds, and terminate boards and commissions that are no longer necessary.
While Coleman believes these reforms will make Missouri’s government leaner and more responsive to the needs of its citizens, some of the proposed initiatives are already covered by existing laws. For example, one bill aims to repeal expired and obsolete statutes, despite the fact that the Joint Committee on Legislative Research is already required to compile such a list.
One of the key proposals includes requiring the administration to report state-owned properties that have been unused for three or more years to be sold off. This measure aims to cut down on waste and save money on property maintenance, with properties like an abandoned prison near Jefferson City potentially being affected.
While Elon Musk is making drastic changes at the federal level, Coleman’s proposal could save an estimated $6.6 million by redirecting unused state funds. The goal is to eliminate inefficiencies and maximize the use of taxpayer dollars to create a state government that works effectively for the people.
