Rudy Giuliani settles defamation case with former Georgia election workers

Rudy Giuliani has settled a defamation lawsuit brought against him by former Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea Moss. Giuliani falsely accused them of election fraud in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. A federal court filing on Monday stated that Giuliani had “fully satisfied” the judgment against him, which amounted to $146 million in damages, including interest and attorney fees. The judgment was reached after a jury trial in 2023, where it was determined that Giuliani had made false statements about the women. In August of that year, a federal judge ruled that Giuliani had defamed the women. The harassment resulting from Giuliani’s false accusations led to death threats and online harassment from Trump supporters. Freeman and Moss testified before a congressional committee about the impact the defamation had on their lives. A settlement agreement was reached between Giuliani and the women in January, with Freeman and Moss expressing relief that their names had been cleared after a “living nightmare” of the past four years. Giuliani had been found in contempt of court for failing to comply with orders related to the judgment, but the recent filing indicated that the judgment had now been satisfied.
