Missouri Sports Betting Launch Postponed Until Autumn

Missouri sports bettors will have to wait until fall to place wagers, as Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins rejected emergency rulemaking action to begin licensing operators for sports betting. Hoskins believes there is no need for emergency measures, stating that the standard rulemaking process can achieve the desired outcome by September 30, 2025. Before voters approved sports betting last fall, Hoskins had been a main obstacle to sports betting legislation due to his belief that sports betting legalization should be tied to video lottery terminal legalization. Despite the setback, regulators still plan to meet the December 1 deadline for sports betting launch in Missouri. This delay comes as other states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Georgia are considering sports betting proposals. Missouri is one of the few states without a legal sports betting market, with 13 commercial casinos currently operating in the state. Sports betting revenue is expected to help boost the state’s gambling revenue, which dropped by 2% last year to $1.88 billion. The delay in sports betting launch is seen as a final speed bump before the state can start generating tax revenue for the school system through sports betting.
