U.S. engages in standoff with Ukraine and Europe over conflicting U.N. resolutions regarding Russia-Ukraine conflict

The United States lobbied countries at the United Nations General Assembly to oppose a resolution brought forth by Ukraine and European countries regarding the war in Ukraine and instead support a U.S. draft resolution. However, European countries won support for three amendments to the U.S. resolution, causing the Trump administration to abstain. The amendments included stronger language regarding the conflict, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and achieving a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace. Despite lack of U.S. support, the U.S. resolution passed with new language adopted by the U.N. General Assembly, as did Ukraine’s resolution. The U.S. actively opposed Ukraine’s resolution and instructed diplomatic posts to engage host governments to support the U.S. resolution. The U.S. will request worldwide support for its resolution at the UN Security Council, where they have veto power. The Russian amendment proposing addressing the root causes of the conflict was also opposed by the U.S. Ukraine’s resolution demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, a demand the U.S. does not support. The U.S. aims to achieve a lasting peace in the region. Overall, the U.S. faced challenges in gaining full support for its resolution at the United Nations due to competing interests from other countries and differing views on how to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
