Keiner Asprilla, the 7-foot-1 center for St. Peter’s Prep’s basketball team, has been arrested in Jersey City as a “fugitive from justice” and will be voluntarily extradited back to Columbia, Missouri. Asprilla is facing a forcible rape allegation in Missouri, where he visited the University of Missouri as a recruit in September. The incident report from his case states that on October 8, Columbia Police officers responded to a report of sexual assault.
Asprilla, who is 18 years old and originally from Colombia, came to New Jersey to study at St. Peter’s Prep on an I-20 visa. His attorney, Chris Kinum, stated that Asprilla looks forward to addressing the allegations in Missouri and will defend his name in court while exercising his right to be presumed innocent. It is unclear where Asprilla is currently being detained or when he will be extradited.
During the hearing at Hudson County Family Court, Asprilla consented to be sent back to Missouri to face the allegations. It is noted that Asprilla was accompanied on his trip to Missouri by Oscar and Martha Ruiz, with whom he resides in North Bergen, and no players or coaches from St. Peter’s Prep were present during the incident.
