Bipartisan Missouri Senate vote passes anti-hazing bill

The Missouri Senate passed an anti-hazing bill, known as Danny’s Law, named after former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli. Santulli suffered alcohol poisoning and permanent brain damage during a fraternity hazing ritual in 2021. The bill, Senate Bill 167, aims to protect the first person to call for help when someone is in need of medical attention due to hazing and requires them to stay at the scene until help arrives. The bill sponsor, Republican Sen. Kurtis Gregory, emphasized the importance of not delaying emergency calls in potentially saving lives.

Santulli, who now requires full-time care, was left without aid for hours after being forced to drink a dangerous amount of alcohol. The bill passed with bipartisan support, along with six other bills covering topics such as regulating fireworks sales, controlling invasive plants, and expanding the definition of child endangerment to include fentanyl and carfentanil possession.

Following Santulli’s injury, the fraternity involved had its recognition withdrawn and faced legal action. The bills will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
