Blizzard Hits the North, Floods Strike the South, and Severe Storms Rattle Eastern U.S.

Parts of the eastern United States are facing severe weather this weekend, with possible “life-threatening” flash flooding in the Southeast and significant snowfall in the Upper Midwest through New England. The National Weather Service predicts heavy snow in Michigan, upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, northern Massachusetts, and interior Maine. Flash flooding is expected in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, particularly in Kentucky and Tennessee, with up to 6 inches of rain in some areas and isolated totals of up to 8 inches. Widespread and intense thunderstorms are forecasted, with a risk of strong tornadoes in parts of the lower Mississippi Valley. In the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, a broad area of rain and thunderstorms will persist, with isolated risks of heavy precipitation and flash flooding. In the Northeast, moderate to heavy snowfall is expected, with winter weather alerts spanning from Nebraska to Maine. Sleet and freezing rain will create challenging driving conditions in the region. The storm is expected to intensify in the Northeast late Saturday into Sunday, bringing strong winds and blowing snow. Overall, the storm is forecasted to move off the East Coast by early next week, but cold air and blustery winds will likely remain over much of the eastern half of the country.
