Missouri won’t have sports betting available for the Super Bowl, but it is expected to launch by summer.

Legal sports betting is set to launch in Missouri by mid to late June, according to Jan Zimmerman, Chairman of the Missouri Gaming Commission. This will allow Missourians to place bets on sports such as the St. Louis Cardinals. The rules and regulations have been submitted to the Governor’s office for review, with licenses expected to be issued to casinos, sports teams, and untethered platforms like DraftKings and Fan Duel.

Despite recent ads and mailers promoting fantasy sports platforms like DraftKings or Underdog, these are not the same as legal sports betting. Fantasy sports are considered a game of skill, while sports betting involves chance. It is important for residents to understand the difference before placing bets.

Although the process for awarding licenses may be slower due to all licenses being awarded at the same time, the state expects to roll out legal sports betting much sooner than the one year timeline provided by the initiative petition passed by voters last November. Missourians will no longer need to drive out of state to bet on major sporting events like the Super Bowl, which sees an estimated $1.39 billion in betting each year. This news is welcomed by sports fans like Aaron Povolish, who expressed disappointment at the missed opportunity of not being able to bet on the biggest sporting event of the year in Missouri.

Overall, legal sports betting in Missouri is on the horizon, with the hope of boosting revenue for the state and providing residents with an exciting new way to enjoy their favorite sports.
