Missouri DNR Finds No Worrisome Levels of Chemical Contaminants in Henry County

Residents in Henry County, Missouri are concerned about potential chemical contamination in the water and soil around the Davis R-XII school campus. While the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) did not find the cancer-causing chemical hexavalent chromium in their testing, residents are awaiting independent results. The school district is currently holding classes at a nearby church due to contamination concerns.

Chace Larson, a long-time resident, expressed skepticism towards the DNR’s report and raised questions about the safety of the community. A lawsuit against Evergy, for mishandling hazardous materials like fly ash at their Montrose Facility, has further fueled concerns. The lawsuit prompted a class action lawsuit and widespread community meetings.

While Evergy has agreed to participate in third-party testing, residents remain skeptical, especially after independent testing by Triangle Environmental Science and Engineering found high levels of various contaminants. The DNR’s findings only highlighted elevated levels of arsenic, which they attribute to natural background levels in Missouri.

Despite assurances from Evergy and the DNR, residents like Larson are still questioning the safety of their community and are eagerly awaiting the results of the independent testing. The situation remains ongoing as the community continues to push for accountability and solutions to address the potential contamination issues.
