Former State Senator and 2024 gubernatorial candidate Bill Eigel has announced his intention to run for St. Charles County Executive in 2026. This decision comes after Eigel fell short in his bid to become chair of the Missouri Republican Party. He will be joining a Republican primary field that includes County Council Chair Mike Elam and Lake St. Louis Mayor Jason Law. Former State Senator Chuck Gross also has an active campaign finance committee but could not be reached for comment.
The current incumbent, Republican Steve Ehlmann, has decided not to seek re-election, leaving the field open for new candidates. Eigel, who finished second to Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe in the Republican primary for governor last August, is now focusing on local politics in St. Charles County.
Despite facing no competition from Democrats at this time, Eigel will be working to secure support within the Republican party and build a strong campaign for the county executive seat. This announcement comes shortly after former Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, Kehoe’s endorsed candidate for Missouri GOP chairman, was elected to the post over Eigel in a recent election. Eigel’s decision to run for St. Charles County Executive in 2026 sets the stage for an interesting and competitive race in the coming years.
