Leader of Neo-Nazi group found guilty of planning attack on Maryland power grid

Brandon Russell, the founder of a Florida-based neo-Nazi group, was convicted of conspiring with his ex-girlfriend, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, to plan an attack on Maryland’s power grid as part of their shared racist beliefs. The duo wanted to carry out sniper attacks on electrical substations in Baltimore to create chaos in the city. They were arrested before executing their plans. Russell was found guilty of conspiracy to damage an energy facility and will be sentenced later. Russell previously had legal trouble for possession of an unregistered destructive device and improper storage of explosive materials.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Russell and Clendaniel were planning to incite a race war, while the defense claimed Russell was not actively involved in the plot but rather a supporter of efforts to disrupt society and promote white supremacy. Russell’s attorney called him a “cheerleader” for the cause. Despite the defense’s argument, the jury found Russell guilty.

Russell was previously involved in a 2017 double homicide case, where his roommates were killed. The investigation led to the discovery of explosive materials and neo-Nazi paraphernalia in Russell’s possession, leading to his conviction on those charges. Russell was sentenced to five years in prison, during which he developed a relationship with Clendaniel, who also held white supremacist beliefs. Clendaniel pleaded guilty to plotting the attack and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
