In Georgia, a man named Vincent Lemark Burrell was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals, including 107 dogs seized at his property in November 2022. This is the longest-known sentence involving dog fighting. The case began when an Amazon delivery worker reported dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property in Dallas, Georgia. Law enforcement officials found evidence of abuse, such as underweight dogs lacking food, water, and shelter, as well as dogs restrained with logging chains. Burrell was arrested and evidence on his property linked him to dog fighting, including a treadmill designed for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick. A veterinarian found signs of fighting on some of the dogs, such as removed teeth and scars. The seized dogs were taken in by a nonprofit animal rescue organization. A dog named Baby Shark, intended for illegal fighting, was among those rescued. Burrell was convicted on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals, and received the maximum sentence allowed by law. The prosecutor involved in the case, Jessica K. Rock, described the severity of the crimes and the importance of holding Burrell accountable for his actions.
