Missouri House refuses Senate’s immigration incentive plan

House Speaker Jon Patterson has stated that a controversial Senate proposal in Missouri to offer rewards for reporting undocumented immigrants is unlikely to move forward in the House. The Senate plan introduced by Senator David Gregory aims to establish a state-level program akin to ICE, with rewards of up to $1,000 for identifying undocumented individuals. However, critics fear potential abuses and point to a recent incident in Troy where a man allegedly impersonated an ICE agent.

Governor Mike Kehoe has not directly addressed the legislation but has linked the state’s fentanyl crisis to illegal immigration. He expressed a willingness to work with President Trump to crack down on illegal immigration. The House majority views immigration enforcement as a federal responsibility, especially following the signing of the Laken Riley Act, which mandates federal detention for undocumented immigrants accused of certain crimes.

Representative Bridget Walsh Moore has called the legislation fear-mongering, highlighting concerns about potential abuses and privacy violations. Patterson emphasized that there is little enthusiasm in the House for implementing a bounty system for reporting undocumented immigrants. Critics argue that the legislation could promote vigilantism and lead to dangerous situations.
