Understanding Black Hawk Helicopters: Their Functions and Uses Following the D.C. Plane Crash

The UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopter, known as the “workhorse” of Army aviation, collided with a regional jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board both aircraft. First introduced in 1979, the Black Hawk is a versatile utility tactical transport aircraft used for various missions including air assault and relief operations. The aircraft, built by Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed-Martin, has a strong track record for safety, reliability, and survivability in combat and transport missions. The Army has relied on the Black Hawk for major operations worldwide for over four decades.

The collision involving the Black Hawk and American Eagle Flight 5342 occurred during a training mission conducted by Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, based out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The crew, described as very experienced, was on a routine annual evaluation of night flying capabilities. The cause of the collision is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The incident has raised concerns about crew training and safety protocols within the military. A previous collision involving two Black Hawk helicopters prompted the Army to temporarily ground all aviation except for critical missions to prevent accidents. Despite this, statistics show that Black Hawk helicopters have fewer deadly incidents relative to their hours flown compared to other Army helicopters. The review of fatal incidents involving Black Hawks suggests that while incidents may occur, the aircraft remains one of the safest options in the Army’s fleet.
