Early Breakthrough for Missouri Sports Betting

Legal regulated sports betting is set to come to Missouri earlier than anticipated, with temporary licenses expected to be issued by June 30 of this year. The Missouri Gaming Commission is moving ahead of schedule in implementing regulations for both retail and digital sports betting, with the possibility of launches in time for the 2025-26 NFL season. The state, which only recently legalized sports wagering in late 2024, will have a total of 21 sports betting licenses available. Various betting brands, including DraftKings and FanDuel, are expected to secure licenses due to existing relationships with Missouri’s professional sports teams or physical casinos.

The state’s sports betting regulations will include responsible gambling provisions, with a slice of tax revenue dedicated to treatment, prevention, and research programs. Missouri’s approach to college prop bets aligns with the NCAA, prohibiting wagering on individual performance of Missouri collegiate athletes. Despite being late to the sports betting party, Missouri’s new regulations are shaping up with a moderate tax rate and potential for substantial revenue for the state. Chair of the Missouri Gaming Commission, Jan M. Zimmerman, is leading the charge in creating a regulatory infrastructure for the official sports betting market launch expected in summer 2025.
