The U.S. House Ethics Committee has announced that it has identified additional allegations that warrant review in its investigation of Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz. The committee is looking into claims that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed favors to individuals with whom he had personal relationships, and obstructed government investigations.
Gaetz’s office responded to the allegations by calling them new frivolous investigations, but did not provide further details. The committee stated that despite the challenges in obtaining information from Gaetz and others, they have interviewed witnesses, issued subpoenas, and reviewed thousands of documents in the matter.
The investigation into Gaetz began in 2021 following allegations of sex trafficking and drug use. The case was referred to the Department of Justice, which declined to pursue charges. After this decision, the House committee resumed its investigation last year.
Some allegations, including sharing inappropriate images on the House floor and misusing state identification records, will not be pursued further. The committee emphasized that the mere fact of an investigation does not imply any violation has occurred.
The House Ethics Committee did not comment on the new investigations when contacted. Gaetz has denied all allegations made against him and the committee confirms that the investigation is ongoing. The outcome of the investigation into Gaetz’s conduct remains to be seen.
