Missouri narrowly approves sports betting after expensive campaign efforts

Sports betting will soon be allowed in Missouri following the passage of a ballot measure in the November election. State election officials certified that the measure received 50.05% support, with betting set to begin no later than Dec. 1, 2025. The $43 million campaign for the measure was funded primarily by DraftKings and FanDuel, with support from the state’s professional sports teams.

Opposition to the measure, funded entirely by Caesars Entertainment, was unsuccessful in preventing its passage. Missouri will now allow sports betting at casinos and professional sports team venues, with licensing fees and taxes going towards problem gambling programs and education.

This initiative comes after unsuccessful attempts to legalize sports betting in the state Senate, making Missouri one of the latest states to legalize sports betting. While it is gaining popularity across the country, some states like California and Texas still prohibit it. In California, voters rejected two proposals to legalize sports betting in 2022 after a significant amount of money was spent on campaigns for and against the measures.

The passing of this measure in Missouri signals a growing trend towards legalizing sports betting across the country, providing new opportunities for fans and businesses alike. Fans in Missouri can look forward to placing their bets on sports in the near future.
