Christopher Collings, a 49-year-old man, was executed for the sexual assault and murder of a 9-year-old girl in 2007. His execution came after Governor Mike Parson denied clemency, stating that Collings had received all protections under the Constitution. In other news, a Jefferson City woman died from injuries sustained in a crash on U.S. Route 63. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Cally Coatney, was not wearing a seatbelt.
On a different note, the Columbia Police Department has been approved to purchase new technology to aid in gun crime investigations. The new tools will allow investigators to upload images of bullets and casings to a national ATF database, shortening the turnaround time for evidence processing. Additionally, the MKT Trail in Columbia celebrated its 40th anniversary with the unveiling of a new art piece by Artist David Spear.
Lastly, the Voluntary Action Center received a grant award for the construction of the Opportunity Campus Resource Center. The project aims to provide resources and services to the homeless in need. The VAC has raised 8% of its $18.6 million goal through support from local businesses and government assistance.
