Guam community comes together to honor the passing of the last adult håyun lågu tree, a native plant species decimated by invasive species. The event included a reading of the children’s book “Mother Tree” and featured speakers such as traditional healer Lourdes Manglona and Dr. Else Demeulenaere from the Center for Island Sustainability. The ceremony took place near the mother tree and its remaining seedlings, with discussions on genetic research and conservation efforts. The National Park Service’s Asan Beach Restoration kickoff event saw community volunteers successfully locate and dispatch 10 invasive brown tree snakes, with ongoing efforts to protect native wildlife. With funding from the National Audubon Society, Friends of Islan Dånó will resume snake searches on Dånó island. The event served as a reminder of the importance of preserving Guam’s biocultural diversity and interconnectedness with the environment. Community members are encouraged to participate in future conservation efforts to protect the island’s native species. Start small, start now!
