Famed London celebrity haunt The Groucho Club has had its license suspended by Westminster City Council after a request by the Metropolitan Police. Neither party has disclosed the reasons behind the suspension, but the club has faced allegations of illegal activities in the past. A once-popular venue frequented by celebrities like Princess Diana, Kate Moss, and Harry Styles, The Groucho Club was founded in 1985 with the aim of being a new kind of club that welcomed creatives regardless of gender.
The club, named after Groucho Marx, attracted big names like Rod Stewart and Freddie Mercury and had strict rules regarding membership and behavior. Overseeing the club was front-of-house manager Bernie Katz, known for his discretion and partying with celebrities. Katz’s retirement and subsequent passing marked a turning point for the club. Complaints from members about open drug taking and a loss of the club’s unique feel led to changes in management.
In 2022, the club was bought by Artfarm for a reported £40 million. A letter circulated among members declaring the club “almost dead”, citing rising costs and changes in the membership committee. The Groucho Club’s future remains uncertain as it struggles to regain its former glory amidst these challenges.
