Community members in Boone County came together on Thanksgiving Day to serve free Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. The events, hosted in Ashland and Columbia, were not just for individuals facing financial difficulties, but also for those who may be feeling lonely or looking for companionship on the holiday. The CEO of Powerhouse Community Development Corporation, Charles Stephenson, emphasized the importance of bringing people from different backgrounds together to celebrate and share a meal. The gatherings provided an opportunity for individuals to connect with new people and create a family-like environment.
In Columbia, the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church hosted the city’s 27th annual sit-in community Thanksgiving dinner, where hundreds of meals were served to essential workers and the elderly. In Ashland, the free Thanksgiving dinner also served as a fundraiser for the veterans organization “Welcome Home” and was organized by Brenda Ravenscraft, a veteran supporter. The events were made possible by the generosity and support of volunteers and organizations within the community. Both dinners featured traditional Thanksgiving dishes and desserts, such as turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. These community gatherings not only provided a warm meal for those in need but also highlighted the spirit of giving and gratitude on Thanksgiving Day.
